Georgina Southam MIRV,  BA(Hons),  FGA,  DGA, a valuer for SafeGuard, a division of AnchorCert Group, received the prestigious Alan Hodgkinson Bursary at the Scottish Gemmological Association Conference from the Academy of Valuers at the start of May.

The Alan Hodgkinson Bursary was launched in 2018 to celebrate the pioneering achievements in practical gemmology of Alan Hodgkinson, author of Gem Testing Techniques. The bursary aims to create a unique opportunity for further education and training for new, and experienced valuers and to provide support to the wider fields of valuation/appraisal and gemmology.

The recipient, Georgina, was chosen by Alan Hodgkinson himself upon reviewing applicants’ personal statement on what gemmology means to them and the importance of it when training to be a valuer.

The Scottish Gemmological Association Conference at the start of May hosted a variety of lectures and workshops on prominent gemmological topics and the latest issues facing the industry before ending with an awards ceremony which included the awarding of the coveted Alan Hodgkinson Bursary.

After receiving the award Georgina said, ‘I am absolutely delighted and honoured to have been awarded the bursary! I would like to thank the Academy of Valuers and Alan Hodgkinson for the generous bursary’.

Georgina is a jewellery and watch valuer for SafeGuard, AnchorCert Group’s jewellery and watch valuation division at the Birmingham Assay Office. Whilst working there, Georgina has also obtained her IRV, Independent Registered Valuers status, passing with 96%. A valuer for over ten years, Georgina previously worked at Fellows Auctioneers and in 2009 was awarded the Doug Morgan Gemmological Trophy for achieving the highest FGA mark in the Midlands Region.  She also dedicates a lot of her spare time towards the Gem-A Midlands branch, where she was appointed chairman in 2013.

Carla Goodfellow, Operations Director of the AnchorCert Group commented, ‘Our SafeGuard division provides the very best service when valuing jewellery, watches or silverware, and to do this we have a team of expert, passionate valuers. We’re extremely pleased one of our team, Georgina, has been recognised by the Academy of Valuers for her hard work and dedication to the trade.
